NANI - The Artist

Songwriting & Music Production
Self-Expression Through Music
As an artist, NANI has spent the past four years building herself a name in the UK and establishing her sound. Her sound ranges from dreamy synth-pop numbers to guitar-driven alt-rock songs. NANI has built a considerable catalogue of releases over the past few years and has been playing shows all over Scotland. Most notably King Tut's Summer Nights, The Great Eastern Festival and supporting acts such as Art School Girlfriend, CoachParty, and Carrie Baxter.

On the 26th of November, NANI released her latest Single 'Darling'. It provides a new side to NANI’s music with its upbeat, bass driven chorus. Written and produced by NANI herself, ‘Darling’ signals an evolution in her work in these areas while hinting towards an evolution in her sound.

Her 2020release, the 6-track EP "Pure Frustration" has been met with critical acclaim and has received airplay on BBC Radio Scotland, with the track"Sunshine" being featured on BBC Introducing's Hot List. NANI describes "Pure Frustration" as "A collection of songs about this seemingly never-ending state but also its opposite (aka ~ vibing ~). A collection of songs that spans contexts, locations, people and sounds but truly is about finding the world extremely f***ing annoying.”

After releasing her EP “ROSES” in the summer of 2019, her song “Shine” was featured on BBC Radio Scotland’s Introducing show and “Your Eyes” ranked as the “Number 7 Tune from Scotland in 2019” by The Herald. "ROSES" was later followed up with the alt-rock single "Let Me In".

Building on her existing body of work which includes the 2020 EP – "Pure Frustration" - and her latest single "Darling" she wants to continue releasing new music in 2022. Having built up a bank of songs over the past year, she aims to release a string of singles as well as a possible EP. Her sound has evolved and expanded, and these will give her the opportunity to showcase that. This will go hand in hand with her new full band set up which will come into full fruition in 2022. Having missed out on a lot of gigging due to Covid-19, she hopes to be able to play beyond Edinburgh and Glasgow and begin to expand her audience.

On NANI's Music

"This EP shows NANI’s qualities as a songwriter. Her lyrics are unapologetically personal and weave stories as engaging as anyone in the country. Her music is clearly versatile, with a number of styles on offer, despite having strong narrative themes running through the record."
- Sandy Power, Pictish Prism, On "Pure Frustration"
"Her third project follows NANI’s debut EP Roses (2019) and single Let Me In (2020) in embodying her artistic diversity, with ‘Pure Frustration’ being her most mature and full bodied creation yet."
- Carron Miller, LOAF Magazine, On "Pure Frustration"
"Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter NANI has shared her first new single since last year’s ‘Pure Frustration’ EP. Like sweet, lo-fi dream, the collection traversed through an eclectic mix of sparse, R&B-infused arrangements and sunny, guitar-driven melodic pop. Now, a year on, she’s taking a step forward with new song ‘Darling’ – a grooving alt-pop number that glides through warm synth tones and sparkling, upbeat choruses. Written and produced by the singer herself, it signals an evolution in her work."
- TenementTV, On "Darling"
Both "Pure Frustration" and  latest single "Darling" have been covered extensively across Scotland’s main media platforms. All but a few tracks from "Pure Frustration" were featured on BBC Scotland’s Introducing programme with "A Tender Embrace from Pretenders" featuring in their Pop Out Playlist and "Sunshine" being included on BBC Introducing’s Hot List. Furthermore, Phoebe and Shereen have also given the Mystery Season remix of "Pure Frustration" and "Darling" airtime.

A variety of written publications have covered NANI's music over the past year such as full reviews in Tenement TV, LOAF, Pictish Prism and others. A variety of tracks have also been included in prominent playlists curated by The Skinny and by Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber.

Most notably, NANI has recently done an interview for Afrodeutsche’s ‘People's Party’ on BBC Radio 6 Music. This was aired in late January and was a great opportunity to expand NANI's  audience due to its Friday evening slot and large viewership. The segment was a short interview about a selection of tracks and aims to introduce the audience to new and emerging artists across the globe.
